More than 600 patients with MdDS have been treated with the Dai protocol, which was developed at Mt. Sinai. And this doesn't include the countless patients treated in other facilities around the world. Researchers report one-half to two-thirds of individuals report greater than 50% improvement in symptoms and some a complete resolution within 3 days of the Dai protocol (Dai et al, 2017). In our clinic, 360 Balance & Dizziness, we have monitored 12 patients over the last year and 75% reported greater than 50% improvements. Yet, a couple reported less than 50% and one reported a worsening of symptoms.
The takeaway is the consideration of the low risk-to-benefit ratio. In other words, the Dai protocol will help some, will not help others, but it's worth trying for those suffering from MdDS. Also of note is that clinicians can include other interventions, such as manual therapy, cervical kinesthetic training, grounding techniques, self-guided meditation, etc. to optimize patient outcomes. Pharmaceutical interventions and cognitive behavior therapy have also been shown to be beneficial.
